Players begin by selecting their Rogue, equipping initial loot and skills, and determining their starting stats before embarking on their dungeon exploration. Navigation through rooms is facilitated by mini-maps, categorized into various types:
- Traders: These characters provide options to exchange loot or stats for other resources or henchmen. Some transactions necessitate passing a stat test or rely on the roll of dice. Typically, loot traders will exchange two items for any single item they offer, with exceptions made for particularly valuable treasures.
- Combat Rooms: In combat scenarios, 1 to 3 monsters are drawn from the monster deck in accordance with the dungeon level. Resolution of combat relies on the Rogue's primary stat combined with a D10 roll. Success is achieved if this total exceeds the monster's combat stat; failure results in damage to the Rogue. Equal results lead to mutual damage. Damage mitigation is possible through discarding armor or utilizing skills or magical items. Potions and food can be consumed at any time to restore health and stave off death. Certain monsters exhibit vulnerabilities to specific thematic loot—defeating foes like Medusa requires clever utilization of reflective surfaces. Vanquishing monsters yields loot and experience points proportional to the dungeon level.
- Traps: The dungeon is fraught with traps; however, many can be disarmed or circumvented if players possess the necessary equipment. Even in instances where resources like rope are unavailable due to gremlin mischief, players might still emerge unscathed by passing relevant Strength, Agility, or Intelligence tests.
